FUT or follicular unit transplant is also known as strip surgery. This is one of the most commonly used procedures for hair transplant and is the ideal choice for people, who have a large area that has gone bald. In this procedure, the hair bearing skin is removed by using a scalpel from the back of a person’s head and the gap at the back of the person’s head is sutured together. The strip then gets divided in grafts consisting of one or two follicles and then implanted in the same way as FUE.
Hairs on the sides and the back of the head are not affected by male pattern baldness. As a result a hair transplant surgeon can remove donor hair follicles from the sides and back and relocate them on the top of the scalp where hair loss has occurred and the newly transplanted hair will grow exactly as it had from the donor region.
Before beginning a hair transplant your Surgeon will review several important concerns:
These are some of the most important issues in deciding whether someone is a suitable candidate for hair transplantation.
The first step in the hair transplant process is the design of the hairline. The surgeon will sketch a suggestion for placement of the hairline. You are encouraged to participate in this decision process.

Next the donor area is prepared. Hair in the back is lifted and a narrow strip of hair is trimmed. The hair from above will cover the area. Both the top and the back of the scalp are then anesthetized. This is usually the only discomfort you will feel during the procedure, and lasts only one or two minutes.
Narrow strips are removed from the donor area and the hair from above and below are brought back together with a simple running stitch.
The stitches are covered by your hair and removed in one week to ten days, leaving a tiny scar line that is concealed by your own hair.
From the donor strip naturally occurring Follicular Units, usually groups of 1-3 hairs, are separated under a microscope to preserve every follicle.
The surgeon next creates the sites where the grafts will be placed. Tiny incisions are made at the hairline for the smallest 1 to 3 hair grafts. As the surgeon works back he will place gradually larger grafts containing Follicular Unit Groups. This allows your surgeon to accomplish more density without sacrificing naturalness. During the entire procedure you will be alert; chatting with the doctor and staff. Procedure time is usually between 3 to 6 hours.
When your hair transplant has been completed you will be provided with post-operative instructions.
Generally, on the day of surgery, you are asked to come a few hours before the surgery is schedule. This time will allow the staff to guide you through all that will happen and also complete the requisite paperwork including the informed consent form. This is also the last time to talk to your FUT surgeon and clear all your doubts. The surgeon will demarcate the area, in accordance to the prior consultations, including drawing the exact hairline. These markings will be the final ones.
You will be administered sedation, local anaesthesia or a combination of both, to ensure that you are comfortable and do not feel any pain or discomfort. In many cases, like at our clinic, anaesthetic gel & high frequency vibrations are also used to reduce the discomfort or pain caused by the injections. So we make sure procedure is virtually pain free
The doctor will make long vertical incisions to remove the strip of scalp with the hair grafts, which will be used for your hair transplant. The exact location of the donor area has to be chosen very carefully, because this has to be the area where the hair density is maximum, as only this can ensure long term stability of the transplanted hair. At CurlsnCurves Clinics we only use trichophytic closure to have a fine scar
As soon as the strip of hair is removed, it is placed in a physiological solution, which minimizes the body’s natural fluids and gives time to close the wound created by the strip removal.
The harvested strip is now divided into single layer of hair follicular units called the Slivers. Each sliver is then trimmed for any extra tissue. The grafts are then separated individually which will be finally implanted in the bald area.
The creation of the recipient site has to be done with precision, because this will decide the complete look. Fine blades or needles are used to create the site and then the angle of hair is decided. A good surgeon will ensure that the sites are created in a way that the final look is completely natural. At Curlsncurves Clinics, we use custom blades as per size of graft.
After the sites have been created the grafts will be transplanted into holes made by the surgeon. At the end of the procedure, each of the grafts will be checked again and you will be told about the post op schedule. You will also be given a printed copy of the same, so that you can follow all the instructions. Your donor area will be covered with bandage and you will be able to wear a cap to provide further protection.
Most patients resume normal activity in a day or two. Tiny crusts will form where the transplants have been placed and usually shed in 4 to 7 days. The small hairs in the newly transplanted grafts normally shed within 2 to 4 weeks after the procedure, and permanent hair growth begins in 8 to 12 weeks. You should expect significant cosmetic hair growth within 12 months and full hair growth within 18 months.
